Some of you may or may not be aware, but I first started looking into the Peace Corps last year, but knew that there was no way I could apply at that time. First of all, I had at least six months left on my lease, my car was nowhere near being paid off, and I still had a year and a half of school left.
Well, things have changed.
Recently I found out that I’m losing my job, so I signed up for my remaining classes and I’ll be done this semester instead of next semester. On one hand it’s good that I’ll be done sooner, but on the other hand it’s not so great because I’ll be taking four classes while looking for a new job. Sigh. At least my car and lease will be paid off by the end of the year.
Back to the Peace Corps business.
I officially started the first part of my application right at the New Year. For those of you who are not aware, the application process is pretty involved. You have to get three letters of recommendation. One has to come from your supervisor, one from a friend that’s known you for over two years, and one from a volunteer supervisor. The third person can be replaced by another former supervisor or a college professor you worked with.
Once you request your letters of recommendation (which I suggest should be the first thing you do), you fill out a lot of various personal information. Most of it covers your past volunteer work, academic information, etc. You also have to send them a resume. After all, it IS a job.
Did I mention you also have to write two essays?
These requests really aren’t unreasonable when you consider that this is a major commitment. Once one is accepted into the Peace Corps they commit to a two year three month term of service. Not for the flighty. Oh yeah, and the application process easily takes up to a year (this includes legal forms, medical clearance, etc.)
Anyhow, I will keep all of you updated each step of the way. Enjoy.
